§10-1-14a. West Virginia Program for Open Education Resources; material description.

During the 2019 Regular Session of the West Virginia Legislature, House Bill 2853 established the West Virginia Program for Open Education Resources and added section §10-1-14a to the Code of West Virginia, 1931. This section provides the following definition for open educational resources:

(2) “Open education resource materials” means teaching, learning and resource materials in any medium, digital or otherwise, that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits low cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution by others with no or limited restrictions.

WV OER Funding Opportunities

West Virginia Open Education Resources Grant
A grant organized by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and the West Virginia Community and Technical College System to incentivize OER adoption in college and university courses, especially in high-enrollment general education courses. In addition to funding, recipients will also attend a workshop and report on their findings.
WVU Open Educational Resources Grant
This grant program for instructors supports the use of and the development of OER, encourages development of alternatives to high-cost textbooks, and supports faculty who wish to implement new pedagogical models for classroom instruction.
WVU Open Textbook Review Workshop
At this annual workshop, attendees discover open textbooks in their field and write a short review of their findings to help other faculty evaluate them for adoption. Attendees receive a stipend for their participation and written review.

Designed to meet the needs of the WVU and WV scholarly community, the DPI is a collaborative among WVU Libraries, the WVU Press, the WVU Humanities Center, and the WVU English Department. Its vision is to provide consulting services, open access and non-profit publishing and hosting platforms and services, workshops on scholarly communication, and internships.
